Prevention of Ringworm in Humans
With Photos

Learn how this case of Ringworm which spread to the entire body was treated
As you can see from the ringworm photos below, the fungus that causes this
condition, human ringworm is difficult to prevent. This page discusses
prevention of ringworm in humans as well as illustrates the condition through
photos of ringworm. In humans ringworm is common and is quite contagious even before you see any
signs of symptoms. However, there are a number of steps you can take to reduce
your risk of infection. These preventative measures include:
- Educate yourself and your children about the risk of getting
too close to people who have been infected with ring worm.
- Avoid contact with someone who you know is infected. If your
contact cannot be avoided, wash your hands carefully with soap and water.
- Do not walk barefoot, especially in high-risk areas such as
schools, day-care centers, gyms, public showers, and locker rooms. Try to
wear sandals, water shoes, or “flip flops.”
- Minimize sweat and moisture since the fungus associated with
ringworm likes this type of environment. Try to stay cool and dry, wearing
loose clothes that allow the skin to breathe instead of restricting
underwear, pants, and pantyhose. Also avoid being out in warm, humid
weather as much as possible.
- Change your socks and underwear at least once a day especially
when it is warm or humid. One myth is that white socks help protect from
athlete’s foot. This is not true. The best prevention is actually clean
clothes and no contact with someone who is infected.
- Maintain proper hygiene by washing your hands and body
frequently. Also keep your bed sheets, towels and clothes regularly
laundered with hot water and soap. Keep all of these items away from anyone
that may be infected with ring worm.
- Disinfect sleeping, gym, and yoga mats after each use.
- Do not share personal items, such as clothing, towels, hair
brushes, or hats with anyone in case they might be infected. Since children
often are carriers for scalp ringworm, make sure they have their own combs
and brushes. Be sure to clean and dry these items after each use.
- Make sure that all cuts and scratches are cleaned and
disinfected as soon as possible. This will help your children especially
avoid outbreaks which tend to be quite common in schools and day care
centers.
- When at home, expose your feet to the air to keep them dry.
- Avoid touching animals that have bare patches where fur is
missing. This is often a sign of ringworm. Be sure to have your pets
checked over by a veterinarian because they can easily get infected and
re-infected. Dogs seem to have ring worm more often than cats.
- Shampoo your hair regularly especially after you get a haircut
because you do not know for sure how careful the salon has been about
keeping their scissors and combs clean.
- Completely dry your skin and feet after showering or bathing.
If you know that you are infected, here are some steps you can take to avoid
spreading it further on you or to others:
- Complete all treatment as instructed even if the symptoms
disappear before your medicine is finished.
- Avoid contact sports, such as wrestling, if you know you are
infected for at least 48 hours after being treated for any lesions.
- If you already have athlete's foot, put your socks on before
your underwear to avoid spreading it to your groin area.
- Do not share your towels, hats, clothing, or other personal
items with others.
- Minimize any close contact with others.
